Just when you thought you had heard it all in terms of foreclosure horror stories, we have a new area of the American population being affected. Active members of the military—and often those personnel stationed overseas fighting our many battles.
Iraq and Afhganistan, properties in some part of the foreclosure process skyrocketed 492 % from the previous year.
Unfortunately, current law makes it difficult for those currently in military service or even veterans to refinance higher cost mortgages into VA-guaranteed notes. So basically, you can risk your life for your country, we just can’t seem to have adequate or fair laws in place to guarantee your family will have a place to call home while you’re stationed thousands of miles away.
“Conveniently,” neither the Department of Veterans Affairs nor the Pentagon track the number of military families dealing with foreclosure. That way, you don’t have to fix something you don’t even know is broken.
For those military members with VA loans, there are at least a few protections in place. However, with the onslaught of subprime mortgages during the Bush administration, military personnel were able to get lower initial rates and easier terms and qualifications than if they had gone the VA loan route. Consequently, the number of people taking out VA loans has, in recent years, dropped to its lowest rate in 12 years.
Stay tuned in Part 2 when we talk about some of the proposed legislation in Washington to help stem this disgraceful practice of foreclosing on active military members and how real estate agents can take action on this as well.
Congress has passed a bill to give homebuyers another three months to close on their home loans and receive tax credits up to $8,000. The bill applies ONLY to homebuyers who met the April 30, 2010, deadline with a signed contract to purchase a new or existing primary residence. The bill would extend the deadline to September 30, 2010, for homebuyers to close on their real estate transaction. The previous deadline was June 30, 2010. President Obama is expected to sign the measure into law.

WASHINGTON(MarketWatch) -- Nonfarm payrolls grew by a seasonally adjusted 431,000 in May,but virtually all the new jobs were temporary jobs at the U.S. Census, leavingprivate-sector hiring very weak, the Labor Department reported Friday.
Excluding411,000 temporary Census workers, payrolls rose by 20,000 in May. According tothe survey of 400,000 business establishments, private-sector payrolls increasedby 41,000, the fifth straight monthly gain.
"Adisappointing private payroll number to be sure," said John Ryding andConrad DeQuadros of RDQ Economics.
Thepayrolls growth came in weaker than the 540,000 increase expected by economistssurveyed by MarketWatch. Seeour complete economic calendar and consensus forecast.
Pricesfor Treasurys rallied as investors on Wall Street bid stock prices sharply lowerin reaction to the payrolls data. Seefull story on the markets.
Digestingthe data, Wells Fargo chief economist John Silvia said the U.S. economicrecovery continues.
There'sgrowth, he said, but it's "too slow to generate the revenues publicpolicymaking are hoping for, too slow to generate all the jobs households areexpecting."
